Dirk Nowitzki

Dirk Nowitzki is part of a young generation of founders which is aware of its privileged situation. His exceptional sporting career and his tight connections to his native home Würzburg compose the basis for his social activism.


It seems as if the love for sports of Dirk Nowitzki was to the manner born on July 19, 1978. His mother Helga Nowitzki was a player in the German national basketball team and his father was a long-time player for the TG Würzburg handball team. The connection to his home town Würzburg is still very important to Dirk Nowitzki. It is no coincidence that his German foundation is based there. It is where his personal roots are and his family lives there as well. Already as a child he played in a local club. But his first sporting successes were in tennis. He made it to the second ranking place in his age group in Germany.

At the age of 19 he already played in the German premier league for his native club DJK Würzburg. His sporting success began in a small gym in Würzburg. Here he learned about discipline, fairness and team spirit. The 6.9" / 2.13 m global super star is grateful for this influence to this day. Four years later he founded his first trust in the US, the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation, which supports underprivileged children all over the world in order to give them better access to education and health and therefore providing an easier start into life.

The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation supports projects and initiatives which provide admission to society through sports and physical activity and thereby enabling them to have good start-off chances for a positive development.

Dirk Nowitzkis sporting career

In 2011 Dirk Nowitzki won the NBA Finals with the Dallas Mavericks 2011 as the first German and received the MVP Award as the most valuable player of the series. He plays for Dallas Mavericks since 1999 in the US professional league NBA (National Basketball Association). He is considered one of the best basketball players in the world as was nominated ten times for the NBA All-Star Game (2002 – 2011). He received as the first European the award for the most valuable player of the season 2006/2007. Dirk Nowitzki also proved to be successful with the German national team, for example by winning the bronze medal during the world cup 2002 and the silver medal during the European championship in 2005.
